BBC Bitesize Careers Roadshow visited Hummersknott. They brought their ‘share Your Story’ tour, the story tellers discussed their creative career journeys. It was an amazing opportunity for students to meet and learn about the ‘story tellers’ career paths.
Fat Brestovca -Host
Jake Smith -Panellist actor
Nathan Elwick –Panellist producer/director
Harry Roy -Panellist sports journalist
They did 4 one hour slots, doing an hour to each year 7, year 8, year 9 and year 10. Each session consisted of the host interviewing the ‘story tellers’ about school, ambitions, how they got where they were, what they enjoyed about their career etc. They then allowed pupils to ask questions at the end. Hummersknott has a very strong creative arts ethos, with lots of students passionate about the Arts/ This meant they were every engaged with the roadshow and asked some brilliant questions.
Student feedback was very positive, they were even a little overwhelmed to have such success stories I front of them. The host made the show very funny and accessible, and they were very relevant to the pupils.
Gatsby Benchmarks
BM2 – Learning from careers and labour market information- pupils learnt about what jobs the story tellers could get in the region, but also discovered that some of them had to move away to London to be able to achieve their dreams.
BM4 – Linking curriculum learning to careers- the story tellers talked about subjects they had studied, but also talked about subjects you would not necessarily link with their job and its importance. For example, the actor talked about how he danced and how he used his knowledge from his science lessons to look after his body better.
BM5 – Encounters with employers and employees – they got first had experience of being self-employed, as all the story tellers were freelancers.
Impact
1000 students accessed the day. Staff were very positive, an art teacher was loving the fact the creative subject had been covered, as she felt they could even be neglected. She felt this really raised their profile. She hopes it comes back again on tour.
The Drama teacher also really enjoyed the show and managed to get contact details with the actor who was more than willing to come back and do further activities with the students.
