About the activity

‘Lesson takeovers’

Enterprise Adviser Wendy Glaister from Santander, and All Saints Academy, have come together to work in partnership to focus on benchmark 4 (careers in the curriculum) and benchmark 5 (encounters with employers and employees).

As part of their careers programme each faculty and subject area are expected to organise at least one employee guest speaker into their classrooms or extra-curricular activities each academic year for a ‘lesson takeover’.

Within Business Studies, Year 9 Business students are currently working on Unit 3 (people) and learning about the recruitment process. Santander visited Y9 lessons to deliver a one-hour session on effective CV writing and interview skills during lesson time. This was organised with the support of their school Enterprise Advisor, Wendy Glaister.

Another example of ‘lesson takeovers’ included The Royal Marines in BTEC Sport.

Next steps

These sessions have increased employer engagement, given students the opportunity to encounter ‘real life’ scenarios, improved knowledge and understanding of how employers recruit from an employer perspective, and allowed them to reflect on their personal skills.

Staff have also gained an insight into how they can work with outside stakeholders to enhance and support their subject as well as building upon their network.  All staff will be taking part in this to ensure that their subject is linked to the word of work and students have encounters with employers and business.
