Teacher Curriculum Development and Bursary Opportunities
Offshore Wind Energy – Sofia Champions for Wind
The 1.4 gigawatt Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, sited on the shallow central area of the North Sea known as Dogger Bank, is one of the world’s largest offshore wind projects. The power produced by the wind farm will be brought 220 kilometres to landfall between Redcar and Marske. A new buried cable is being installed to bring the power to a new onshore converter station being constructed adjacent to the Wilton Complex, near Lazenby. The power will enter the national grid at the existing National Grid substation in Lackenby.
Sofia is searching for another cohort of secondary school and college teachers across Redcar & Cleveland and eastern Middlesbrough, to help them encourage the next generation of offshore wind workers by joining the Sofia Champions for Wind education careers initiative.
The teachers will work as ‘Champions’ to develop, implement and share new curriculum materials with the aim of engaging Key Stage 3-5 students in the potential of the offshore wind sector as a future career option. This new cohort will cover two years, with the first year focussing on developing and delivering the curriculum and the second on extending its outreach. Each school will receive a bursary of £1500 during 2022/24 to add value to any activities. The programme supports the Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Career Guidance.
We welcome creative and innovative proposals from teachers from any subject.
Examples of materials produced from earlier cohorts of teachers and schools can be viewed here: https://sofiawindfarm.com/community/education-and-skills/
The programme is supported by education professionals who will provide virtual training sessions and access to existing information and resources to enhance the curriculum materials.
To apply please use the short application form here by midnight 12th September 2022
After school support and CPD sessions will be arranged in the Autumn term plus the opportunity to visit some of the active sites that are being developed as part of the programme. In addition, Sofia staff will be available to attend school career related events.
