Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each pupil. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.

Schools should provide a careers programme that:
- Raises aspirations of all students
- Challenges stereotypical thinking (In terms of, for example, gender)
- Keeps systematic records on each pupil’s experiences of career and enterprise activity
- Enables pupils to access accurate records about their careers and enterprise experiences
- Collects and maintains accurate data for each pupil on their destinations for three years after they leave school
- Shares above mentioned data with the local authority
- Works proactively with the local authority and careers advisers to provide careers guidance to vulnerable pupils and special educational needs and disability (SEND) students
