What is a National Insurance number?

A National Insurance number is your child’s own unique personal account number. They will need one when they are applying for a job/training, benefits or for a student loan to attend university.

They will usually get their National Insurance number sent through the post, just before their 16th birthday. This will be in the form of a letter, they no longer issue a National Insurance card. It is really important you keep this document safe, this will also prevent identify theft.
